South African role models for interracial relationships that work

Lira likes to sing about ‘love, life and relationships’. It’s something she knows a bit about. Her husband, Robin Kohl, is her producer – and now her manager as well. He was a sound engineer when she met him at the age of 19. ‘I met him in a studio and I just remember him being so kind. Six years later, he asked me on a date. ‘We went to Wang Thai in Sandton for dinner at seven and I got home at three. I fell in love. I didn’t see it coming. Guys can often objectify you, but not him. He was so there for me. I didn’t need to put up any defences. I felt safe and open.’
The couple married in an intimate ceremony in Mauritius in 2009. ‘There were no cultural issues at all. Everyone surprised us – even my 95-year-old grandmother didn’t mind he was white. Our families are very tight. And yes, when I have time, we’ll have kids.’
